Facebook Privacy Security Breach. Again
Facebook was recently in the news for an incident involving data privacy. The company had a program in which they paid teens and adults $20 per month for the privilege of allowing the company to monitor their mobiles, including the history of their browsing as well as physical location and private messages. The program, Facebook said, was meant to enhance its products. The news didn't be well received by Apple and they decided to block Facebook in its own apps on iPhones. Apple Facebook block What Facebook has to say about the controversy A Facebook spokesperson stated that "It wasn't 'spying' as all of the people who signed up to participate went through a clear onboarding process asking for their permission and were paid to participate. Finally, less than 5 per cent of the people who chose to participate in this market research program were teens. All of them with signed parental consent forms." How Facebook Used Apple's Enterprise Tool Its Facebook Research App targeted users who were as young as 13 years of age. Facebook is interested in knowing the activities of its customers doing on and off Facebook because they are dependent on advertising networks and other companies that are interested in information of its users. Facebook didn't distribute the app in the normal way, through the Apple App Store. Apple issues a certificate for apps that allow distribution that are not available through Apple's App Store. The main purpose behind this procedure is to test the future apps as well as corporate access apps. In accordance with Apple regulations, these certificates are strictly to be used internally within the business. Facebook was a major exception to this restriction and used the certificate to download their Facebook Research application on volunteers' phones. Apple and Facebook are locked Horns Again In light of this, Apple revoked the certificate which allows these internal apps to run. Facebook has since closed Facebook Research for iOS however, it offers a similar application for Android. In disabling the company's internal applications, Apple sent a direct message that this behavior was not acceptable. The most significant aspect of this story could be that Facebook seems to have piqued off Apple once more, but an entire Facebook ban won't happen because Apple users will eventually suffer in such a situation.
